Summertime Crickets

Hi everybody!  Rose here.  Today's post will be short, but I wanted to give you guys an update, as I've been getting questions about when we'll be more active again.

I haven't blogged in a few weeks, and I know that lately, my posts have been sporadic and far fewer than normal.  For those who are still following us, thank you so much!!  Your support is so awesome, and very much appreciated.

We are planning on getting back into blogging more frequently over the next few months.

This year has been beyond crazy, and the Spring/Summer handed us some huge life changes, so our focus went to taking care of our personal life for a while.  Now that things are settling down, we're looking forward to getting back to blogging!

We hope you all are doing fantastic, and enjoying the winding down of Summer.  Thanks again for your support! :D

Ciao for now,

~Rose

Turtle Hibernating

So, our baby turtle, Fred, has been hibernating for almost 6 months straight!  Yikes!!

He freaks us out sometimes, because we think he died or something.  We'll put him in some luke-warm water, and he's happy as a clam.  Then as soon as he's back in his box, he goes right back to sleep, and doesn't move!

He doesn't eat for weeks, and rarely ever moves, unless I pick him up and get him to stretch out.

We always joke that he's got the best life out of everyone else in the house.  We thought our cat had it easy, but man, that turtle is just a lucky duck!!

Being my first turtle, I'm not exactly sure if this is normal or not.  But I figure, if he's hungry, he'll eat the food I keep in there.  He swims once a week, and stretches every other day.  He's alive, so I guess he's ok?  Eek!

Anyone else have a baby turtle, or experience with them?  What do you think about them?  Is this normal?  Aren't they adorable!! :D

Our Pets! :D

Since this blog celebrates pets, we figured we'd share ours with you! :)

We have three goofy dogs, a cat who thinks he's a dog (until he decides he's a cat again), and a very lazy baby turtle.

Learn more about them below, listed in the order we got them.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

~ Max ~

~Breed: Chartreux/Russian Blue Mix

~Born: Spring of 2008

Max was our first pet together as a couple.  In May/June of 2008, Ken found him outside his work-place at the time, and decided if the kitten was still there when he got off that night, he'd bring him home.  Several hours later, the little kitten was sitting outside our truck, waiting for Ken.  We took that as a sign, and adopted him.  He was very young, maybe 6 weeks old at the time.

He's very confident, dominant, and helps us keep the dogs in line.
Max definitely lives up to his Chartreux breed- he acts like a dog!  He loves to play fetch, knows several commands, and enjoys snuggling with the other pets.  He's also incredibly vocal- he loves to walk around the house singing.

Most of the time, you can find him snuggling with one of us, one of the dogs, or eating ;)

~ Chevy ~

~Breed: Beauceron/Pit Bull mix

~Born: September 30th, 2011

We got Chevy when he was 5 weeks old, as soon as he was able to go with us.  He was born to a young mother with a split litter.  Having 12 puppies made her skittish with them, so Chevy took over the lead of the puppies.  They saw him as the leader, and he was very happy to be one. :P

He's dominant, head-strong, and incredibly loyal.  His mixed breed makes him both stubborn and tough.  He's definitely Ken's dog, and sees him as the alpha/pack leader.  He's a fantastic guard dog, is incredibly patient with other animals, and loves to help integrate new pets into the family.

~ Ace ~

~Breed: Beauceron

~Born: Winter, 2012

Ace came as a bit of a splurge adoption.  After the couple we adopted Chevy from told us about his dad, a Beauceron, we spent several months researching them.  When we saw Ace at the shelter, we were positive that's what he was, and jumped at the chance to adopt him.  Besides the double-dew-claws and distinctive "J-shaped" tale, both characteristics to only the Beauceron breed, the shelter workers told us they found him near a known local Beauceron breeder.  Lucky, hu? :)

~ Daisy ~

~Breed: Miniature Dachshund

~Born: No idea...

Daisy was our last shelter adoption.  She was found in a park, having recently given birth to a litter of puppies, of which only one survived.  She and her surviving puppy were being cared for by a stray Chihuahua who was also brought into the shelter.
When we first brought her home, she wasn't able to keep down any food or liquids, and was very malnourished.  We nursed her back to health, and within a few weeks, she was eating solid foods.  Before being found at the park, we believe she was in an abusive home, due to her extreme skittishness and fear of any movement or touch.  We've spent the past several years rehabilitating her, and teaching her to be confident and mentally healthy.

Now, she's just a little snuggle muffin! :)

~ Fred ~

~Breed: Painted Box Turtle

~Born: Spring/Summer of 2013

Fred was a total surprise adoption.  Chevy found him behind our back gate, and Ken brought him in for a few minutes to let Rose play with him.  He was so adorable, that we decided to keep him.  With all the stray cats and bazillions of birds around our house, we knew he probably wouldn't live long, and he's just too darn adorable to give up!
Luckily for us, he took to us quickly, and actually enjoys being part of the family.  He, believe it or not, knows his name, and our voices.  When he hears us, he starts heading to us!  Unless he's grumpy with us...then, he goes in the opposite direction and pouts!  He's lazy for most of the day, but adores swimming and getting head rubs.  He also loves napping in Rose's hoody pocket :)

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

I'm sure we'll be adding more pets to our home in the future, but for now, we have a very full, happy family :)
